The History of Our Baptist Church
Organization of the church
Bible Baptist Church of Nashua, New Hampshire, was organized in 1979 by several families, the majority of whom were ex-Roman Catholics of French-Canadian descent. In the early days of the church, the church met in the Disabled American Veterans Hall in Nashua. In late 1979, the church called Pastor Wilson Ewin from Lennoxville Quebec Baptist Church (Canada) as its Pastor. He served as pastor from 1979 to 1990.
Effective witness and extensive skills
Pastor Ewin had a well-known reputation for being an effective witness to Roman Catholics, and was an evangelistic preacher of the Gospel. The church rented a parsonage for Pastor Ewin and his wife (Trudy) until permanent facilities could be obtained. Most of the founding members had extensive building and construction skills, which they used in the Lord’s service to construct the present parsonage and church buildings.
The land and building of our current location
The current church property lot, between 62 Caldwell and 117 Fairview, was purchased in 1987. Church members built the main parsonage, and held services in the basement of the parsonage for a number of years. The church also began construction on the church building in 1987. The church currently meets in the fully finished ground floor of the main building and is making plans for the completion of the upper floor as we grow.
An interim leadership
After the departure of Pastor Ewin, several men from local churches in the area helped fill the pulpit for a short time. Then, in 1991, Dan Quigley was called to be the pastor of the church. Pastor Daniel Quigley served as part-time pastor from 1991 to 2000. During his years as pastor, Pastor Quigley led the church in accomplishing several major objectives for the church such as: major strides in completing and improving the grounds and facilities. In late December of 2000, Pastor Quigley resigned as pastor of Bible Baptist. Bible Baptist Church is extremely indebted to Pastor Quigley and his family for their personal sacrifice and for his stable, focused leadership.
Bible Baptist was again without a pastor for a short time. During this time, several men were a great help to our church in filling the pulpit. In 2002, Bible Baptist asked Michael Pillsbury, one of these men filling the pulpit on a regular basis, to pastor our church. Michael Pillsbury, graciously accepted the call, and served as pastor of Bible Baptist Church.
At the time of his call, Pastor Pillsbury was a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, NH. He had completed his formal education and had considerable experience as pulpit supply. Although Pastor Pillsbury came on as part-time pastor, he performed full-time oversight of the flock, and quickly demonstrated his gift of administration in the numerous pastoral duties. Pastor Pillsbury demonstrated a great love for the church and for the Lord. During his ministry the church grew in many ways, and quickly demonstrated the need for a full-time pastor to lead the church into its next stage of growth. Pastor Pillsbury, seeing this need, resigned Bible Baptist in June of 2005.
Our present pastor and his background
At this time, the church, stepping out by faith, began searching for a man who would come and pastor the church full-time. Through a series of events, the Lord led Bible Baptist to contact Steve Bates. After serving as youth pastor in a church in Georgia, He felt the Lord calling him to the pastorate. At that time, he felt that the Lord wanted him to receive additional training in the Word of God prior to pastoring. In 2002, the Lord led him and his family to Emmanuel Baptist Theological Seminary in Newington, Connecticut which is a ministry of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Unanimous call for service at BBC
After a number of conversations and visits, the church voted unanimously to call him as the pastor of Bible Baptist Church. He accepted the call in late June of 2005. Pastor Bates began his ministry here at Bible Baptist Church on August 7, 2005. He and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Charity, Megan, and Rachel. We are excited about what the Lord has in store for us here at Bible Baptist Church. By faith, we believe that the Lord will bless us as we obey Him.
