Church Music Ministry
The people of God and music
The people of God have always been a musical, singing people. It is both our heritage and even our trademark (Ex. 15:1; II Chron. 35; Psa. 33:3; 40:1-3; 137:1-4; Rev. 5:9,10; 15:3). The people of God have expressed their faith in singing. Our worship of God has been "voiced" in the words and sounds of God-honoring music. Our joys and sorrows have found expression in song. Our hope for the future and our consolation for the present have been put to the tones of beautiful singing. Our testimony of personal salvation and the "new song" that God has placed in our mouths has been set to music.
A Biblical outlook of music
Ephesians 5:18,19 says, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Here in this great text of being filled with the Spirit, Paul speaks of music and singing. One can clearly glean at least three obvious principles from just these two verses alone, in developing a Biblical outlook of music in their own personal life and in the local church:
• Godly, Biblical Music Is An Expression Of Our Spiritual Condition.
• Godly, Biblical Music Is A Combination Of Scriptural Words And A Scriptural Sound
• Godly, Biblical Music Must Focus On The Lord Jesus, Not The Performer.
An expression of our spiritual condition
Since right music is an expression of our spiritual condition - not everyone should be allowed to get up and sing in the choir or for specials, only those that have a good testimony in the church and community.
A combination of Scriptural words and sounds
Also, right music is a combination of Scriptural words and sounds; for this reason, music that identifies with the world should be avoided. Lastly, right music will exalt the Lord and focus on Him, therefore anything that is drawing attention away from Him should be avoided (such as applauding the musician or "showy" presentation of music by the musician).
Participation in our music ministry
Therefore, we welcome any church member with musical ability, who would share our Biblical outlook on music and be willing to provide special music in one of our worship services, to participate in our music ministry. This includes solos, duets, trios, quartets, small ensembles, and instrumental groups. A pianist and an organist play for our public services to accompany the congregational singing and for special music.
